The Impact Fund provides training for public interest lawyers on a wide range of issues. Our training programs cover beginning and advanced litigation and class action topics, including class action procedure, brief writing, working with expert witnesses, attorneys’ fees, legal ethics, and new developments in the field. We provide training in a variety of formats, including in-person presentations, brown bag lunches, online zoom events, our annual Class Action Conference, and our three-day intensive Class Action Training Institute. As a State-Bar funded Support Center, we are available to provide onsite or virtual training for qualified legal services projects on these and other topics without charge.
Some examples of what we offer:
Effective Legal Writing – A public-interest approach to legal writing, including writing for busy readers, working in a team, and effective scheduling to achieve a persuasive final product.
Litigation 101 - Welcome to Lawyerland – An introduction to civil litigation, including a guided tour through the lifespan of a case, court structure, and appellate review. We also identify the differences between state and federal court.
Writing Effective Amicus Briefs – A primer on amicus strategy and considerations, including when to write, what issues to tackle, and who to team up with.
Supervising Legal Writing - Great legal writing takes time, repetition, and honest and constructive editors. That is where supervisors and writing mentors come in. We will discuss tips for achieving reader-centered writing, working with others to help improve their writing, and normalizing constructive feedback on legal writing. Come and gather inspiration for helping your teams along their writing journeys.
Building Your Case for Attorneys’ Fees - With advance planning, the motion for attorneys’ fees will be the cherry on top of your litigation success, providing no-strings-attached income for your law firm or legal nonprofit. We will discuss how to structure legal billing throughout litigation to efficiently prepare your evidentiary record, how to identify resources to support your motion, and how to make a strong case for fees.
