In this exciting role, the Staff Attorney will represent immigrants in appellate and federal court proceedings, including habeas petitions, petitions for review, and Board of Immigration Appeals. The attorney will collaborate with internal and external partners on impact litigation and other advocacy to address systemic problems facing immigrants in New York City, to identify cases appropriate for appeal to the federal District and Circuit Courts, and track patterns in policy and practice impacting immigrant justice across New York. Prisoners’ Legal Services (PLS) is seeking a full-time Pro Bono Advocacy Counsel to expand access to civil legal services and representation for individuals incarcerated in Massachusetts prisons and jails. The Pro Bono Advocacy Counsel will develop and cultivate relationships with advocacy organizations, the private bar, and volunteers to increase legal representation for incarcerated individuals. This includes building partnerships with law firms, solo practitioners, law schools, and the judiciary to create effective case referral systems and offering guidance to individuals representing themselves in court. The Executive Director will serve as the chief executive and strategic leader of the organization, responsible for advancing our mission, providing broad oversight for legal work, ensuring financial sustainability, recruiting and hiring high quality staff, and fostering a collaborative, inclusive workplace culture. The Executive Director is the spokesperson for PLS and works to develop partnerships to advance the vision and mission of the organization. This role also works with managers and staff in setting, reviewing, overseeing and coordinating the priorities for PLS’s legal work. The Executive Director secures funding, through state contracts, foundation grants, major donations, and other sources in order to effectively grow the organization and works with the Director of Finance to ensure sound financial and fiscal management. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and works with the Board to ensure effective oversight, Board development and organizational growth. The Director of Legal Services will report to all members of DST, Staff, and Collective and collaborate across departments. The Director of Legal Services will honor the collective structure and work to disrupt and deconstruct the inherent power dynamics between attorneys and non-attorneys in legal nonprofits. OUF.

 

Sylvia Rivera Law Project | Director of Litigation (New York, NY) [$125,000]

The Director of Litigation, along with the Directors of Legal Services and Client Services, will be responsible for the administration and oversight of SRLP’s legal program. The Director of Litigation at SRLP will lead the organization’s litigation strategy with a focus on civil defense, civil rights violations, and class action lawsuits impacting TGNCI communities. The role includes advocating for TGNCI individuals in custody, addressing conditions of confinement such as healthcare access, housing transfers, and safety, while ensuring compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). The Director of Litigation will also support movement lawyering efforts, collaborating with grassroots organizations and communities to advance systemic change. In addition, the position involves spearheading public education, Know Your Rights trainings, and policy implementation to safeguard the rights of TGNCI people. The Director of Litigation will report to all members of DST, Staff, and Collective. The Director of Litigation will be expected to maintain a small caseload. OUF.
