How to Apply for Grants

Step One

All new and/or returning applicants are required to submit a Pre-Application proposal, prior to the submission of a full proposal. Pre-Applications should be no more than two pages, and should include the following information:

  • A brief description of your organization and/or firm;
  • Attorneys and/or firms who will be working on the case, contact name, phone number, address and email;
  • Brief summary of the case for which you seek funding, and how it may have a substantial impact;
  • Amount of request and for what it would be used; and
  • How you heard about the Impact Fund's grant program

Pre-Applications are accepted on a continual basis. Applicants who submit a Pre-application are notified promptly whether or not to submit a full proposal.  Pre-Applications may be submitted by mail, fax, or in the body of an email (no attachments, please) to:

Jocelyn D. Larkin, Executive Director
The Impact Fund
125 University Avenue, Suite 102
Berkeley, CA 94710
Email: jlarkin@impactfund.org
Fax: (510) 845-3654

Step Two

Upon our review of the Pre-Applications, all grantees will receive notification either requesting or rejecting the submission of a proposal. All applicants who are invited to submit an application will have their applications reviewed by the Impact Fund's Board of Advisors, who meet on a quarterly basis. Please carefully review the Grants Deadlines page for further information. All previous grant reporting must be up-to-date before an applicant can apply for future funding.

A complete proposal application package should include:

  • One (1) copy of your organization’s IRS determination letter for a 501 (c) (3) organization (if applicable)
  • Two (2) copies of the complaint (court documents) if already drafted and/or filed
  • If you are a nonprofit, please supply two (2) copies of your most recent financial statement or audit. If this is a group application, financial reports from all co-applicants are required
  • One (1) copy of your most recent status or case management statement; and
  • An original, plus 18 collated, double sided copies of the application form (provided) which includes: an Applicant Description, Case Summary and Detailed Proposed Litigation Budget.

Please do not submit:

  • Additional documents such as: pleadings, newspaper articles, declarations, brochures, etc.;
  • A full proposal application, unless invited to do so by the Impact Fund after the Pre-application process; and
  • Please waive signature requirements on UPS, FedEx or Express Mail documents;
  • Please do not bind your application (Staples or binder clips are fine); and
  • Please do not send proposals by fax or email.  They will not be accepted.

Proposal Applications are available in either Word  or Adobe Acrobat formats.
